"The best way to get 4Kids to release uncut YGO" By: "GreatSaiyaman777"
You've heard the 4Kiddies say basically the same thing over and over again. "Ahem- uncut YGO? HAH! As you know, the YGO franchise consists mainly of
dubbies who are ignorant of any... 'original' version, plus the current YGO
fansub base I do not believe would be large enough to support such a
venture. And mind you, it is the duty- and necessity- of EVERY money-making
company to be as greedy and selfish as possible to survive and thrive even
if it means certain fans must be screwed in the ass! Sorry to, ahem, burst
your bubble, but I do not believe uncut YGO would be a wise business venture
for 4Kids Entertainment to pursue, so sorry!"
Alright, so we know the idiot's arguments. They can be easily counteracted
and it's highly debatable whether or not the current "4Kids YGO uncut
excuse" is even true to begin. But for the sake of this editorial let's
just assume that they are and play along with it. So then if that's the
case.... then what's the best thing to do to counterract this excuse? Get
as many people as possible interested in YGO fansubs and expand the YGO
fansub fanbase. And what's the best way to do that? Simple- get somebody
to subtitle the first season of YGO.
As Kevin pointed out in his first anniversary editorial, the first season of
YGO was the best one. It stayed true to the original manga and wasn't
nearly as "cardgame" focused as the later series eventually got. Thus, this
part of YGO would be the one fansubbers might express the most interest in.
Plus- get this- pretty much all of it has already been shown in Shonen Jump
and been read by 100,000's, or even millions, of American anime/manga fans!
There'd definitely be huge interest in this project among fans. Other
previously or still unlicensed shows like One Piece, Naruto and Shaman King
have benefitted in the fansubbing community thanks to Shonen Jump building
up interest in them so there's no reason why YGO wouldn't either.
Furthermore- the first season is unlicensed! And given the nature of the
first series (not very "cardgame", different animation overall, more
violent, etc.) it's unlikely it will be or if it was it'd probably have to
be uncut/dual-version to sell very well. 4Kids and nobody else have said
anything about it being licensed and it doesn't look like it will be anytime
soon. Thus, bit torrents for it can be openly advertised freely all across
the net be it on animesuki.com or whatever the top YGO fan sites are today.
4Kids has built up a lot of anger over butchering Shaman King and will
probably continue to misdub and piss off more fans over time- so plenty of
fansubbers would probably already have quite an axe to grind with them or
will in the future. Not only that but thanks to Shonen Jump, many
fansubbers have already seen the first series manga-form and- as it's truer
to the manga than the rest of the anime series and they're already familiar
with it- it probably wouldn't be too hard to find a person of group with the
time, energy and dedication to fansub the first 27 episodes.
Anbu/Aone, Anime-Empire or Toriyama's World would be good picks. (these are
the only fansubbing groups I'm really familiar with to reccommend but I know
they're pretty good and that there are lots of other really good groups out
there) And if none of these groups would be interested or you don't know
anyone who would be-
http://animesuki.com/group.php
There are approximately ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE DIFFERENT OTHER GROUPS
that could be asked too!
Now we don't want someone with really bad spelling/grammar spamming all 183
different groups they know nothing about all in the course of several hours.
(and to any of guys if this does happen, sorry in advance and please don't
hold this against the 99% of the YGO fanbase or the possibility of one day
doing this project, some people are just extremely hyperactive about this
stuff) The best way for this to work would be for someone who's familiar
with a group's work and has seen a lot of it and knows them fairly well (and
has good spelling/grammar/etc.) to contact them and see what they have to
say, and these groups should only be contacted one at a time individually in
a openly well-documented format in a specific place.
http://dbzoa.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=4dfe6805a8c4a1dd2addad78a79a713e&forumid=47
And if anybody does want to do this then make a topic about it on the Dbzoa
4Kids board (hell, I'll probably do it myself) and mention which group
you're contacting before contacting them (and remember, just contact only one member of any perspective fansubbing group, preferably the main guy in charge, and no more than one. If the person responds no, don't try to bug other members and simply move on to a different group. The contacted person will probably at least mention the idea to other members in the group even s/he's not interested and says no, so you don't really need to worry about talking to more than one person) and give them a week or so to respond. (aka, DON'T contact more than
one group at a time, or contact someone if another group's been contacted
and there's a response in waiting) Then, post their response and if it
turns out to be no or they haven't responded within a week, be patient and
calm (aka, don't curse them out or complain to them for refusing, fansubbing
is a free service after all) then move on to another group. Even if there
are a lot of "no's" in the process this should generate lasting interest
among the contacted groups and perhaps one of them will eventually decide to
watch the first YGO series someday and then decide to fansub it.
So what are you guys waiting for? If you really want to expand interest in
original, uncut YGO by expanding the current YGO fansub base- then this is
the first step which needs to be taken.
