The second, and thankfully final part
of the Haga duel. Umm... same old cuts, slashes, script tossed into a
blender, etc. Only decent part is the foreshadowing at the end with the
mime, well, we'll see as we go through this episode. The torture I had to
go through to watch this episode is worth it because the rape of the Japanese
version, especially on this episode, is inexcusable, and it's a very important
episode for the fans of YGO U because of how they screw up the plot. On the
other hand, however, for the first time in a very long time and probably one of the last times, I actually approve of
a dub change. *Gasps heard 'round the world* Well, you'll see what I mean.
So there are definitely stinkers in this one and good parts of this one. Anyway, time
to venture in to the great unknown... |
A quiet... such a subtle quiet... as the characters in the Japanese stare in awe at the perfected form of the Great Moth.
"That is..."- Honda
"The competed form of..."- Anzu
"Giant Moth."- Sugoroku
Seriously, 25/30 seconds of quiet/interesting music with only those words said. The dub ruins this great moment with a bunch of crap, as usual. It is a real pity. |

"I doesn't want to have them (the x rays), so I am just going to stay in your
room and hide."- That Kid in the Hospital You know, the older I get, the more
retarded this stuff sounds. The brilliant 4Kids writers (not translators,
god forbid we get dialogue and plot actually accurate) decided this was a good
way to start off an episode about courage and strength? To have some whiny
kid blather about x-rays? Obviously, Kento is much more mature in the
Japanese version and discusses that says some people are born strong and smart,
and that one's destiny can't be changed. He goes on to say that the reason
he stays in the hospital was because his mom and dad are nice to him and he
doesn't have to go to school. What is wrong with you 4Kids? This was
good dialogue. Good plot. You cut it out for a whimper
about not getting an x-ray? Oh god, not an x-ray. Anything but an
x-ray! |

They slap some paint on the card of Parasite Paracide, instead of an insect
coming out of someone's mouth instead it's just an insect without signs of
infecting anyone. Kind of dumb considering the card's purpose, in both
versions, is to infect people. Well, this one was Upperdeck's call, not
4Kids's, so they're off the hook, for a change. |

"Will you be my friend?"- Dub Kento You know, 4Kids is actually trying to
introduce a plot element here tying in Kento's fear of those scary x-rays to
"Joey's" courage on the dueling arena. Too bad they're not even close
considering Kento is afraid of a freaking x-ray and Jonouchi has to face one of
the most odd duelists on the planet with powerful insect cards that can wipe him
out of the Battle City tournament. It's such a small difference, or none
at all, to the writers of the dub script. Words is words. |

More digital paint. When Haga's crazy Insect Queen is about to eat Leghul
(part of a balanced breakfast, of course... yum?), the sharp teeth in the
Japanese version are changed into fuzzy whiteness. Uhh... ok. First
we have 4Kids instilling a fear of x-rays into children and now teeth are bad?
What's next, bunnies are actually psychokillers and 4Kids needs to change
them into blobs too? |

MORE digital paint. The laptop in the hospital displays Weevil's level as
7, which is more than Dub Yugi's level of 5! Ruh roh. In the
Japanese version, Level 7 is actually mediocre as Yuugi has above that. In
place of a blank space above "Joey"'s picture, the Japanese version had kana
that said "a nobody", or "bone of a horse". That Kaiba, even putting his
hatred of Jonouchi on his level description! |

At this point, Japanese Haga says he's researched Jounouchi's cards, and knows
they're all warriors. The studious, research-oriented Haga has been
lessened on Weevil in this instance. Don't know why, because 4Kids
mentions the fact that he'd studied every rule of DK before they went there.

Now in the Japanese they discuss being a True Duelist and challenging Yuugi.
Jonouchi says that one day, he will challenge Yuugi for his Red Eyes, etc., etc.
In the English they replace scenes of Yuugi with scenes of "Serenity".
This is to highlight the fact that in the real version there isn't a true
Yuugi vs. Jonouchi duel for a VERY LONG TIME. For the first time in a long
time I approve of this dub change, even though they were actually just glossing over stuff with the sickly sweet Serenity dub story yet
again. This time it actually works in the plot. |

Ok, this is actually a universal thing with the dub AND Japanese. The writers make the big shocker finish/secret way that Jonouchi wins
by saying that the Parasite Paracide is repelled by Gearfried the Knight's metal (iron and steel specifically in the Japanese) armor. Aren't they supposed to be trying to be faithful to the TCG?
By adding in these DK-style explanations it definitely comes into question. Really, Gearfried kills ANY equip-card. ANY. Not just insects, and this
DK-style explanation can confuse many people. Again, I'm pretty sure both versions do this, and it's not the last time they resort to DK explanations
to end duels quickly so they can get onto a big 3, 4, or 5-part Yuugi vs. Bad Guy duel. |

"Soon, we'll destroy Yugi Moto together"- Dub Marik's Voice in the Mime
NO! NO! Bad 4Kids. This original ending is the only really likeable part in this whole episode Because of the mime standing there SILENT with ominous music playing.
4Kids again adds dialogue, but here it completely RUINS the excellent foreshadowing.

The end of the episode is so much better in the Japanese the words above don't
offer it justice. Therefore, thanks to eon513, I offer this YouTube clip of the ending of the Jonouchi/Haga duel with the foreshadowing at the end.
(Foreshadowing at about 5:00 into the clip) The dub just doesn't even come close to comparing.
Of course there's the magnificent end song here that is cut from the dub, so all
the more reason to watch this clip. End of Japanese Episode 91
