" Master of Magicians (Part 2 of 3)" 2-15-03

More Arkana fun in this dub episode. Ya know, I have to say, even though 4Kids doesn't think they are adding humor when in fact they are, they do a decent job of turning a rather dumb episode into hilarious stupidity. We have the normal paint edits in this episode, and also 4Kids cuts out a major flashback scene which reveals WHY he is disfigured and wears the mask. Well, you win some, you lose some. You win a crack voice on helium and Dark Energy Disks, you lose the plot of the episode. Well, onward!

"Stop this duel and end the madness! One more direct attack and your mind will be lost in the Shadow Realm forever!" - Dub Dark Yugi
Yes, 4Kids goes a LONG way to cover up death. Not only do they painstakingly edit the portable buzzsaws for every scene into "dark energy disks" they add many references to the 4Kids version of the Next Dimension.

Ahh, more retarded paint edits. There is a stand selling crepes as Anzu and Sugoroku go down a street filled with people, and it is marked with the word "CLAPE" in the Japanese. Why couldn't they have just fixed the L and the E? It would have just taken a Microsoft Paint box to move some stuff around, 30 second fix. Tsk tsk tsk...

Killer Tomato is now known as Mystic Tomato. Because god forbid we have killer tomatoes running around. They might attack with their... tomatoeyness. Also, Reviving Coffin of Black Magic has been renamed Dark Renewal. Whyyyyy?

There is a pointed cross on Coffin/Dark Renewal with a pentagram on it. With the "magic" of 4Kids' digital paint, it is now a ten-starred decagram. Again, why? We've got all kids of allusions to black magic in these episodes that slip through in the dub, yet a stupid five-pointed star has to be edited? When Mystic Guillotine appears, its blade is painted over with shiny stuff in the dub. Funny thing is, the card art before it comes to life has the blade intact... hmmm...

(Cut: 10 Seconds)

Cut is a shot of Pandora escaping flames. However, in doing this and with stupid dialogue, they completely screw up the backstory of Pandora. You see, Pandora was a magician and Catherine was his assistant. One day, an escaping show went wrong, and the resulting fire deformed Pandora into what you see today. Catherine left him after he pushed her away. The dub's mutilation of the story is quite unfortunate, because it reduces him into a whimpering puppet for "Marik" that sees things.

Ya know, Pandora/Arkana are both retarded. Doesn't he realize Ma(l)rik is, like, a bad guy? Why would he ever think he would give him Catherine? A silhouette appears soon after, and Pandora believes it do be Catherine. In fact, Yuugi believes Malik did, in fact, bring Catherine and is controlling her mind. We'll soon learn the truth.

Nightmare Chains, in the Japanese version, tied the Black Magician up to a cross, ala Jesus. 4Kids thought, I guess, that this would not be too cool with Christians or anybody, so they changed it to a slab. Nevermind the fact that the new diamond slab-thing looks retarded, it is still obvious that it was a cross. Still some doobie-passing going on in the back, methinks.

Also, when Pandora/Arkan summons Killer Doll/Doll of Demise, in the animation the axe and knives in its hand are painted over with digital paint. Again, the card's knives and axe are untouched.

Ya know, the final scene was so touching and despite some dialogue cuts 4Kids managed not to completely ruin it for once. Ark/Pan had put Ectoplasmer on the field, and after a failed first attack sent his Black Magician's soul at Yuugi. According to Ark/Pan, the Magician knew he was but a pawn. However, the expression on the Magician's face proved differently. Yuugi even notes in the Japanese (cut in the dub) that "Pandora, your monster is crying". At the last second, Yuugi's Black Magician, still on the cross/slab thing, blocks the attack. Although the explanations for why it did it were different, at least the air was kept of sadness and sacrifice. Finally, a half-decent 4Kids ending.
