"Defeat the Three Gods!"
9-15-04
"The Final Duel (Part 2 of 4)" 5-27-06

As is the rest of this final saga, 4Kids does a semi-decent job in editing.  Of course, that's not saying much (pointy finger syndrome in DK, Shadow Realm syndrome in pretty much the whole series, huge paint edits), but there are some monstrous cuts that are basically inexcusable.  First off, since this is the first real comparison I've done with the Gods being the central part of the episode, let me get something off my chest.  Slifer the Sky Dragon is a horrible, horrible name for a God Card.  It sounds like something that should be put in a kids show like Pee-Wee Herman or something, not a name that should be respected, as is "Slifer"'s original name, The God of Osiris.  Obelisk and Ra keep their names directly but gay add-ons have been utilized, "The Tormentor" for Obelisk, "The Winged Dragon of" for Ra.  Excuse me, but "winged dragon"?  A 1600 ATK Flying Dragon is a winged dragon, too, do you see it being a God?  Of course not!  The God of Obelisk and the God of Sun Dragon Ra fit the God personalities perfectly.  Otherwise, this was a fairly well done episode especially for 4Kids standards.

Stupid, stupid name changes for the God cards.  At 4Kids is consistent unlike the dubbers of Sailor Moon when it came to attack names.

The God of Obelisk => Obelisk the Tormentor

The God of Osiris => Slifer the Sky Dragon

The God of Sun Dragon, Ra => The Winged Dragon of Ra

Just had to point that out.

"Yugi's in over his head." - Dub Kaiba

As I've said before, I really, really hate the way they are making Dub Kaiba for the final saga in this 5-years-long series.  Kaiba has become a COMPASSIONATE person, or at least relatively for a CEO of a global conglomerate.  Stuart's Kaiba doesn't reflect this change at all, sounding like the first episode of Duelist Kingdom!  That is why this is a stupid dialogue change, when the real version Kaiba talks about how all three gods are on the field.  Here is another example:

"Yugi can't duel his way out of a paper bag, and got his lookalike to duel for him." - Dub Kaiba

Not only are 4Kids taking any humanity out of the Kaiba character, they are also making him ignorant.  The Japanese Kaiba was well aware at this point of the Sennen Puzzle and its power, where it seems the dub version Kaiba doesn't even care.  In the real version Kaiba said that no matter the outcome, this duel (Ceremonial battle) will go down in history.

A really cool piece of dialogue was scrapped entirely for a less cool piece of dialogue here:

"In three thousand years, the Pharaoh's sword was so sharp that no one can stand against it.  If no one can defeat him, this battle ritual won't succeed." - Isis

Compare that to:

"Fate will decide this duel.  If Yugi is unable to defeat his alter ego, the two are not yet ready to separate from one another." - Dub Ishizu

Why, 4Kids, why?  Do you think even the mentioning of a weapon, a sword, would send parents' panties in a bunch?  It is not rocket science that this duel pretty much decides everything, so can't you keep in some of the awesome dialogue?  Please? For me?

"Well done." - Dub Atemu

Uhh, wha?  Yuugi hasn't even done anything yet, the three Gods are still threatening to send his life points to oblivion, and you're congratulating him?  Really, when Regular Yuugi says he'll defeat the Gods and everyone thinks he's crazy, Pharaoh says "That's the spirit", more fitting with the bond these two have shared and also the situation at hand.

(Cut: 45 Seconds)

A massive cut here that pretty much takes a knife and slashes Yuugi's support team away to put more attention on the Ceremonial Battle.  Do I agree with this change?  Yes and no.  Yes because the Ceremonial Battle is the most important duel in the whole series and a lot of attention should be paid to this duel, but no because the compassion of Yuugi's friends, something that 4Kids actually enhanced and highlighted in the Duelist Kingdom saga, is now being ignored through this huge cut.  What was cut individually:

About 5 seconds:  Otogi calls out, "Yuugi", when Yuugi draws his next card.

8 Seconds:  Honda begins to shout some encouraging words to Yuugi but is stopped by Malik.

10 Seconds:  Malik explains that Yuugi is concentrating on a fight within himself, as Yuugi and "The Other Me" are now fighting on opposite sides.

23 Seconds:  Jounouchi recalls the duel with Malik on Battle Ship when he was forced to face the God of Sun Dragon Ra.  Says Jounouchi, "such terror is unspeakable".

"I need to beat the three Egyptian Gods; free the pharaoh, et, al..." - Dub Yugi

Blah, blah, blah.  More stupid dialogue taking away some great lines in favor of reinforcing twenty times over what we already know.  Really, he talks about how he is standing here, facing the three Gods.  He knows this day would come, but he is still afraid.  He's afraid to run.  He's always been running after his other self.

And who wouldn't be afraid, at least just a little bit, when facing the might of the three God Cards?  4Kids, by erasing this line, takes a shit on Yuugi's character.  Remember, he is a timid young boy who, although he has been on many adventures, is now going against the three most powerful cards in all of Duel Monsters and is facing extremely realistic holograms of them thanks to Kaiba's Duel Disk technology.  I would be thoroughly freaked out too.

Next up, Yuugi summons Valkyrion the Magna Warrior to the field, then uses Mirage Magic (Mirage Spell in the dub in keeping with Upperdeck of America's obsession with the elimination of the word "Magic" from the TCG) to negate Osiris's second mouth attack, instead adding life points to his own count to 3400 LP.  Although not a change from the Japanese version, for all intents and purposes this move is sufficiently awesome to be placed in the Side Note category.

(Cut: 5 seconds)

Part of Kaiba's Japanese dialogue is cut along with a close-up of him in the dub.  He says that Yuugi uses a trap card to reduce Obelisk's attack points to 2500, lower than both of Yuugi's monsters.  Therefore, it can't attack without being destroyed.  I can't say I'm sad to see this line go, as it's stating the obvious, but this negates 4Kids' great pains to state the obvious time and time again about how Yugi has to defeat the Egyptian Gods, save the Pharaoh, and restore the Sennen Items.

"Who do you think Mr. King of Games inherited his strength from?" Dub Solomon Moto, in response to Dub Yuugi-tachi's awe about how Yugi is defending against the "Egyptian" Gods

Oh boy... I truly do hate it when 4Kids does this.  I wouldn't have minded it that much if it weren't for the fact that "King of Games" is a completely made up 4Kids title!  Really, he's just best at ONE game, Duel Monsters, of course he also beat Otogi in DDM during the Filler Arc, but for the most part he hasn't really played any other games since the Sennen Puzzle Saga, which was never dubbed by 4Kids.  Plus, we have only seen Sugoroku duel once, against Jounouchi as "Rock the Mask", a pseudo-anagram of Sugoroku Motou, or as Apdnarg in the dub, against Joey Wheela.

(Cut: 10 Seconds)

Cut is a shot of Mokuba turning to Kaiba, uttering "Nii-sama" (brother).  Kaiba then says the Gods have no weaknesses, turns to the playing field and asks Yuugi in his head, "What will you do?"

This must have been a time cut, because it was a pointless cut by 4Kids IMO.  Then again, since they already cut a 45 second segment of commentary by Yuugi-tachi in the "audience", did they really need to cut for time?  I really really don't get 4Kids, never have, and never will.  These are the same people who gave up the cash cow that is Pokemon and have a president that says how "hot" an 8-year-old anime character is (Al Kahn, "Tokyo Mew Mew")

"There is no way Yugi can win this duel, he's not even the real King of Games." - Dub Kaiba

Yet another instance of how 4Kids is taking the Kaiba character and has mutilated its evolution into non-existence.  They truly make him sound like he did in Japanese Ep. 28/ English Episode 1 where he barges into Sugoroku's game store asking for the BEWD.  It is pitiful.  You, 4Kids, are pitiful.  Really, Kaiba is thinking about how even he can't figure out the weaknesses of the God Cards, and if Yuugi wants to win this duel he'll have to do the unthinkable, and duel beyond even his (Kaiba's) imagination.

(Cut: 12 Seconds)

Cut is a piece of dialogue and Isis telling Yuugi-tachi that the Pharaoh has strength beyond their imagination.  Why was this cut?  Does 4Kids want the Pharaoh/Atemu to look weak already, even though he has the upper hand, clearly at this point, with all three Gods against Yuugi?

As Yuugi begins to hatch a plan to use Atemu's own Mirror Force against him, for some reason 4Kids reversed the card art of the Mirror Force.  Why?  I don't know, I gave up trying to come up with reasoning behind 4Kids' decisions in the fourth episode of Duelist Kingdom.

Another cool round of Gods vs. Traps that just has to be mentioned is where Yuugi activates his Magnet Force trap, and reduces Atemu's Gods to 3000, 2000, and 500 attack points for Ra, Osiris, and Obelisk respectively.  Now comes the next part.  When Yuugi attacks the God of Obelisk, Atemu activates Mirror Force, killing ALL of Yuugi's Magnet Warriors (which he split back up into three) and Silent Swordsman, which leaves only his Magnet Force continuous trap on the field, however, Yuugi smiles and says that he was waiting for the Mirror Force, and says that now he can destroy the God Cards easily.  "How?" Pretty much everyone except Yuugi wonders.  The excitement!  The anticipation!  Next comparison, you'll find out how Yuugi kills the God Cards, pretty much unrealistically (thanks a lot, writing staff) in one fell swoop!
