Well well... long time no see gang. Been another half a year and FUNimation's finally released another Z movie. Man, they sure are trying to stretch out the releases aren't they? As FUNimation stated, "Movie 7 will be released in February 2003, with the rest every 3 to 6 months." So if this rate continues....

Movie 9 will come out as early as November 2003
Movie 10 will come out as early as February 2004
Movie 11 will come out as early as May 2004
Movie 12 will come out as early as August 2004
Movie 13 will come out as early as November 2004
or...

Movie 9 will come out as late as February 2004
Movie 10 will come out as late as August 2004
Movie 11 will come out as late as February 2005
Movie 12 will come out as late as August 2005
and Movie 13 will come out as late as February 2006


I don't want to brag or anything but man, my list I made back while reviewing Movie 5 certainly has been pretty accurate. I originally made it as a guide I could check back on to keep track of things, but it's actually turned into the most popular thing about my movie reviews. (Shrugs.) Oh well, whatever makes people happy. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with how things turned out this time- for the most part. As such, like my Movie 6 review, this one's going to be relatively short too, whereas my Movie 7 review was simply gargantuan in length. Some people are really mad at FUNimation for taking so long to release the movies, but I'm not. As bad as FUNimation can be sometimes, they do get better, more intelligent and more skilled over time- so as far as I'm concerned, this is a good thing as each movie release is likely to be handled better than the last.

However, I can't help but feel kind of lonely... with so much done right, there's not much I can bitch at or make fun of. Christopher Neel Bligh- as much as I dislike many of your writings, you were a great source of comic relief and will truly be missed. Make no mistake, I certainly don't want you to do the same thing to Movie 9 and the rest of the movies that you did to Movie 7, but you will be missed nonetheless.

The Subtitled Version

First of all, this movie came out between episodes 175 and 176 in the Cell saga. Now then, remember those "Rocks and Waves" intros from the first 3 Pioneer movies?

Notice anything? These were originally included as a part of this movie and every DBZ movie, and when Pioneer dubbed the first 3 they made sure to include them and not simply cut them out. You may not have understood what I was talking about in my last review since I accidentally mis-included a paragraph, but it goes like this-

Pioneer showed the Movies 100% uncut. FUNimation has not, and they chose to cut them out. "Chose to," yes, because they seem to have accidentally forgot to have cutten out the "Toei Rocks and Wave" screen from the 5th movie- proof that they can get this stuff. Besides, since you can buy all the DBZ movies in Japan, Toei has no reason to deny FUNimation this stuff like they do with the previews.

Is it minor? Yes. Does FUNimation have any need or reason to cut these things out? Absolutely not. And in a way, it does take away from the presentation of the film and is rather disrespectful to the people who originally drew, wrote up the concept for this film, and built it up from scratch- Toei. Finally, to top things off FUNimation knowingly lies about their tapes and DVD's being "Uncut." There's far more... important stuff they cut out/censor later in the English version, so I'll wait until I get there to elaborate further on the "Uncut" issue.

Anyway, as usual I'm very impressed with the subs. They're... almost identical to the movie fansubs I own. I've almost fully memorized my Movie 7 and 8 fansub scripts and Steve's are like, improvements on them. I guess fansubbers go all out to do great jobs on the movies, and they usually come through pretty good.

Also there's been a bit of confusion on Brolly's name. At first I was confused too. In fansubs, he's called "Brolly" like in "Brocolli." I used to think this despite being a pretty good speller, but it's actually spelled "Broly" since the vegetable is actually spelled "Broccoli." And the official "Super Battle Figure" toys" (toys from Japan with the closest English-equivalent translations out there for the characters they come with... I highly recommend the Broly figure) also call him "Broly." Then again, maybe the fansubbers just thought "Brolly" looked cooler and decided to go with it. No harm done there I suppose, but I'm used to calling him "Brolly" so I'll just stick with that spelling.. Oh, and Goku's Saiyajin name is spelled "Kakarrot-o" in a few instances where Brolly screams and places strong emphasis on the "o" at the end of Goku's Saiyajin name... I wondered how that was going be handled and I guess that was a cool for Steve to handle it.

Also, I've started to notice that the DVD quality is considerably better than my fansub quality. At some point in November, the Great Saiyaman (hey, that's me!) saga-arch of the Majin Buu saga will be released on DVD boxed set... and all 97 episodes of the Majin Buu saga will be purchaseable on just 6 DVD boxed sets. Find a good and cheap place online or somewhere (dragonballz.com always charges max prices, btw) and you could get the whole thing for a good price. All that'd be missing would be the previews, (DAMN YOU TOEI! But I can't help but wonder why there's only one English preview on each disc and I'm pretty sure FUNimation could show all of them if they wanted... hey, if you turn it on mute, and just imagine Masako Nozawa and a bunch of others saying goofy stuff then they're actually not so bad) and the ending kanji translations. Another thing that'll be missing will be kanji translations during the episodes themselves.

What I don't understand is, what does FUNimation have against kanji translations anyway? And why are they so discriminatory in translating them? Yu Yu Hakusho has translations for almost 95% of them all, and DBZ had only one in Movie 7, but apparently FUNimation put a stop to DBZ having more. What I don't understand is... why is it okay for one of FUNimation's less popular releases to have them but not DBZ, which is their number one most popular licensed anime property? It really just doesn't make any sense, but FUNimation can act pretty funny sometimes. I'm sure Steve would love to put them in there like he does for Yu Yu Hakusho, but for some reason FUNimation is just afraid of letting him do so for DBZ. And it's not like fans don't all know that it's Japanese foreign writing and aren't curious about what it says.

C'mon FUNimation, Pioneer's VHS Ranma tapes from the 80's translate 100% of all kanji writing. There's no reason to let it be said that Pioneer's Ranma VHS tapes from the 80's totally own DBZ in 2003 in terms of kanji translations. Also...

"Notice anything? This is the Japanese cast list provided by Funimation for the very first dubbed episode of DBZ... and the 100th... and the 200th... and the 256th... actually, for every dubbed Z episode. It's also the exact same cast list provided for all the movies (except for the ones Pioneer did, which went to the trouble of providing a translation all of the Japanese names in the English version) and the tv specials. However, with the exception of Movie 1, Takeshi Ike and Toshihisa Arakawa did NOT do the music and lyrics for every single movie and tv special contrary to what FUNimation would lead viewers to believe. Congratulations Funimation, you've found yet ANOTHER way of spitting in the faces of the Japanese cast! When you only bother to thank 7 members of the Japanese cast you can't even go to the trouble of thanking the correct 7 members of the Japanese cast! That's just great..."

Yup, they did the EXACT same thing this time as they did last time. Pioneer translated all of the Japanese names when the did the first three DBZ movies and yet, FUNimation refuses to do so anywhere. Man, do these guys hate the original cast who created, directed and voiced DBZ or what? Here's an idea FUNimation- just use the "alternate angle" like you've done for a few GT episodes. Original angle = kanji translated credits. New angle = English translated credits. It's not very difficult to incorporate, and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to. If Gen Fukunaga's uncle could help you guys snatch up the rights to One Piece (you guys ruined DBZ, and NOW they're letting you ruin what's supposed to be the "next DBZ"?) then I don't see why he couldn't help you here, if this actually WAS a problem.



DVD FEATURES

Man oh man oh man... this baby is just LOADED with extras. No really, I'm not joking or being sarcastic, it literally has LOTS of extras. But first, let's look at the covers. (Check out VegettoEX's Movie guide to see comparisons of the English and Japanese covers.)

At first I hated it and looked at it as a lame-looking screenshot type. But, it's kind of grown on me. 5 different Super Saiyajins all in one official piece of official artwork? That's gotta be some kind of record, in DBZ and GT I don't think it ever gets past 4. There's no complaining there. Also, his 2 tv special and Movie 4 and 7 pictures I think were better than the original Japanese cover art. (so sue me, I changed my mind) The only one I really didn't like was Movie 6's. (Shrugs.) Yeah, so I guess Rick Lebo's a much better artist than I previously thought.

Now, lessee... cool pics on the back. Brolly in his 3 forms, and below Goku throwing a punch and Brolly powering up. However there is one small mistake there- the movie was made in 1993, not 1992. Oh well, a small error but hopefully they won't repeat it next time. (psst... Movie 9 was also made in 1993 FUNi.)

Now for the inside.. man, is it LOADED with insert extras.

1. Yugioh, Shonen Jump and Fox Box ad.
2. THREE different cool looking Collectible Card Game Promo cards of Brolly. (I don't play the game, but I have been told that if I did that I'd have good reason to drool over them.)
3. DBZ Taiketsu ad, Brolly merchandise ads, DBZ saga set ads (trust me, just wait for the GS one and them buy em all in one big discount), Yu Yu Hakusho merchandise and CCG ads.
4. New-version TMNT ads, along with another Fox Box ad that includes Shaman King this time. (Who wants to bet 4Kids is going to rape the dub of that show to death like they did to Yugioh? Someone even told me that a group of people were interested in forming a "Yugioh Otaku Alliance" group, plus there are already 2 different Yugioh Uncensored pages out there. Man, not too many anime fans like 4Kids...)
5. A Shonen Jump mail card for a yearly subscription.

Now for the DVD itself... first off we have about 4 "unskippable" ad's. (you can't fast forward or skip straight past them) However, by clicking "menu" I was able to simply avoid them. I don't think it was very cool of FUNimation to do that like they did back with Movie 5, it's in bad taste to try and force DVD watchers to watch 5 minutes of ad's prior to seeing what they really want to see. Now for the menu. Hmm, spiffy. Mostly quiet, not too much music. Probably the 2nd best, just after Movie 6's. The options are- 1. Play, 2. Chapters, 3. Language and 4. Extras. The first 3 are pretty explanatory (nothing of note cept that "English Mono" is no longer an option anymore) so let's look at the extras. At first we have an "Eternal Sacrifice by Tendril" which is basically just the new English song for the intro.

Next we have an inside look at the making of "Legacy of Goku II." I have to say, I really liked that game, although I strongly disagreed with them using some of Faulconer's music from the show (particurlarly his "take" on Spirit vs. Spirit. Man, that was just as painful to watch on the Gameboy as it was on television. The rest sounds a lot like video game music to begin with and kind of fits in) and basing the game's script strongly off of the television dub script. (which was already based off a mistranslated Engrish script- yes, Vegeta still goes SSJ from "not caring about being better than Kakarot" which was almost as painful to watch as the aforementioned dub moment) Still, it was very interesting to see how the game was made and the game overall was a good and fun buy. Finally- the "Trailers" have their own section in the extra's menu (as opposed to simply composing the ENTIRE extra's menu) which is a new tradition I really hope they don't stray from.

The Dubbed Version

I just gotta say- wow. Aside from Movie 6, this is possibly the best DBZ dub script to date. We already know who didn't work on it (thank the Guardian of the earth for that) but you'll never guess who wrote it- Chris Sabat! Hmm... he's always been a voice actor and director for FUNimation, and worked with the DVD menu audio in a lot of various anime DVD's, but being a script writer is a new direction for him. I'm pretty happy with the results, and hopefully he'll continue to write and adapt more dubbed scripts for FUNimation. However.... there was one very, very seriously wrong problem that the English script had that had no right to be there.


Japanese Vegeta- "Dammit! There was neither form nor shadow of the Super Saiyajin!"
English Vegeta- "Darn it! How am I supposed to destroy this thing if you can't even tell where it is?"

Japanese Paragas- "Brolly, what the hell is the matter with you?"
English Paragas- "Brolly, what's wrong with you my son?

Japanese Paragas- "Damn! The threads of destiny have once again intertwined here, have they?"
English- "Errrgh! Whatever it is, I don't like it."

Japanese Paragas- "Oh, hell!"
English Paragas- "NO!"

Japanese Paragas- "Even in hell, you won't see a show of butchery as entertaining as this."
English Paragas- "Watch Vegeta, because massacres like this are rarely seen, even by Saiyan eyes."

Japanese Piccolo- "Son! Dammit! Give Son your power!
English Piccolo- "Listen! We must channel our energy to Goku!"

Japanese Vegeta- "Dammit!"
English Vegeta- "No!"

Notice anything? The Japanese version originally had 7 different curse words... the English version has zero, nada, none. Now before any of you start calling Chris Sabat a Son of a Namek, you need to realize something- this isn't his fault. Can you guess WHO is to blame and who the real culprit behind all of this is?

Ah hell, like you don't already know who it is- and if you didn't know, you wouldn't exactly have to be psychic to guess. That's right people, Gen Fukunaga and rest of the powers that be that run FUNimation ordered Chris Sabat to censor out any curse words, as well as ordering John Burgmeir and Neel Bligh of the previous 6 movie scripts to do the same! (Movie 7's three different curse words was apparently just an "accident"... which the powers that be at FUNimation do not want to see be "repeated".) If this were the "CUT, edited for television" script, it'd be perfectly understandable that all the cursing is censored out. But they ordered it for the so-called "UNCUT" script which isn't supposed to have any censorship at all- why did they do that?

Gen Fukunaga- "Well, we don't want parents or kids or anyone to be too offended by the uncut version we present. Thus, we try to tone down the cursing there."

Yet, some dubbed uncut episodes actually have some cursing. (like, say, Vegeta saying "hell.") Why is that? Because FUNimation knows that most customers will just buy the "uncut" versions of the movies, and that most fans aren't going to buy all of their "uncut" episodes. And you know what? That's a fat load of big f**cking bullshit that the Funi exec's are pulling on the fans.


Funi- "There just would not be any Dragon Ball Z in North America without our censoring it because the Japanese company who owns it would never have allowed it into North America without having it broadcast on TV and broadcasters would never take it without censoring.
Gen Fukunaga- "Yes, I understand. That's why here at Funimation we are trying to produce a US version of DBZ completely unedited with the original music, only in English...our goal is to put this directly on home video. Censors won't allow us to put this on the US TV."


Oh really? So apparently there IS some censoring body outside of the realm of television that does force you to adhere to censoring when you put out releases in the VHS market, isn't there! But seriously.... Chris Psaros reserved this "special privilege" once for Haim Saban, and I think it's way past time that someone give it to you guys...

F**CK you Gen Fukunaga, F**CK you Cindy Fukunaga, F**CK you Daniel Cocanougher, F**CK you Allen Cocanougher, F**CK ypu Robert Cocanougher, and F**CK you Barry Watson. In fact, you guys should just all get together and go f**ck all of yourselves! (assuming that you haven't already done that before many, many times.) You continue to abuse the DBZ property... and you expect us fans to be grateful that Gen's uncle successfully nabbed it up for you guys in the first place? Tch, it was a big mistake for the likes of people like you to have gotten your sickly claws into DBZ and, as one of your "Uncut" scripts might phrase it, I hope that the Guardian of the Earth sends you all to the deepest and darkest regions of HFIL for being such anime-raping assholes... er, anime-hurting Sons of Nameks, I mean.

In any case, this poses yet another mystery... why is Funi advertising this release as "Uncut" when the powers that be at Funi went out of their way to make sure that it really wasn't? Well... the answer to that, my friends, lies within Ramza's archived site. (which you can find in the "Updated DBZU links" section just in case you're interested in seeing this next part firsthand, btw) He found out the truth a long time ago and- well, I'll just let him have this one.


Ramza- "Oh yeah, Funimation has admitted to being lying bastards once again. Think the video on the VHS Uncut tapes are really uncut? Think again. Observe this snip of an article taken from Right Stuff: (LINK- www.rightstuf.com/news/article1.shtml)

'When I spoke with Funimation on this subject, I was informed that the company has levels of "Uncut". For instance, when the company first receives their material for DBZ, they immediately go to work to trimming the content to make the show fall under the guidelines for PG-13. Funimation stated that very little actual cutting is done to accomplish this stage, but that there is some. Next, they translate the script and "Americanize" the dialog to appeal to US audiences (and this is just for the subtitled version!). After Funimation finally dubs the show, they call this their "Uncut" version. '

Levels of 'uncut'? Seriously now, what kind of bullshit is that? Later in the article it states that the DVD's are completely unedited so don't get too pissed off but geeze... how low can you get? Sticking that Uncut sticker on the box of the tapes is an outright lie. Something is either cut or uncut, one or the other. Nice false advertising, guys.

You know.. it's funny... Every time I've bad mouth Funimation in front of the "Funidefenders" (owners of the big websites, figure it out) in a chatroom (I used to visit those often a while ago) when they were there I always get asked the same question, how could you do any better if you were in charge? Well besides the obvious retarded mistakes with how the DBZ property is handled itself, I'd give the company an actual respectable image. They've been caught in lies so many times it's not even funny. If I were to dig deep into old interviews and so on I could make a whole section all about this. Funimation may have introduced many people to the DB/Z/GT series but it's unforgivable how bad of an image they've given themselves. According to the rumor mill, not even Toei is happy with how their treating the show yet they can't really do anything about it.

Even though their DVD's are uncut and I still buy them I hate supporting such a dick of a company."


Heh. Well, it would appear that he was right about the Toei rumor mill and everything else. I think a good way to describe FUNimation's delusions of "Uncut" would be a scenario like this-

(You're in a foreign country.)
You- "Excuse me sir- is this water clean? Will it make me sick?"
Waiter- "Yes, it is clean."

(Later, after you vomit...)
You- "What the HFIL?! I thought you said that this water was clean, but it made me sick!"
Waiter- "Oh, but it is clean sir- to us that is. Besides that, we have our own standards of 'clean' and this water did fall under one of them after all!"
You- "What? But the water was even labeled as 'clean' to boot!"
Waiter- "Yes, we weren't lying to you, under our standards it was clean. On the contrary, sir, it was your fault for not asking us to specify just what level of 'clean' it was."
You- "But... I asked and-"
Waiter- "You are being very rude sir, we do our best to serve clean water and I am offended that you would dare question our methods. What are you, some kind of a water snob? I have nothing more I wish to say to you."


In other words, Funi- it doesn't matter if you label your DVD's and tapes as "Uncut" and then have "secret levels and gradings of Uncut that the 'Uncut' label technically falls under"- IF YOU DO NOT STATE THAT YOU WHAT HAVE IS ACTUALLY CUT IN SOME MANNER, THEN YOU ARE JUST FLATOUT LYING TO YOUR FANS AND CUSTOMERS AND SCREWING THEM OVER.

Bleh... Well... that's all I have to say about that. I don't have anything else to say about this subject for now, but I do have the feeling that unless us DBZ fans bitch at them nonstop and give them holyhell until we almost become hoarse that Funi will continue to censor the "Uncut" version in this fashion. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled Movie 8 dubbed version review. (But before that, if either you Ramza or you Steve Harmon are reading this, could you please drop me an e-mail? I'd really like to reprint the Monika Antonelli with your permission if you guys would be cool with me doing so.)



Now then... cursing aside this movie is at the very, very, very, VERY least 90% accurate to the original story! (Whereas Movie 7 was less than even 4% accurate to the original) The Goku "Son" family name, of course, is missing as usual. (I'm starting to get used to this change. Not content, but just used to.) However, all references to the concept of ki/chi were removed for "continuity" which was kind of lame, as ki/chi play a HUGE role in the universes of DBZ and DBGT and are far more complex than just "energy" and "power levels."

Anyway, the film starts out with a new song- it's a remix of Bruce Faulconer's "Dragon Ball Z theme song" performed by a band called Tendril, and is much better than the original version of the song. I personally think Mark Menza's theme song is the best English one yet so I don't why they decided to replace it for this film.

And... hmmm, there's not a whole lot to complain about. (I'm not going to mention any of the cursing again which I just covered.) For starters, the Kuririn karaoke English song is HILARIOUS and I liked it a whole better than the J. one. (I guess jokes like that just don't really translate very good). Next- er... there are some instances of "cut dialogue" throughout the movie where characters speak in the original version, but not the English version. (And virtually no "Ventriloquist dialogue" except for maybe one or two minor bits)

Here's something interesting-

Paragas- "It has been 30 years since our home was destroyed by Freeza."


Whoa, they finally got the date right for once! If you go by Freeza's "20 years ago" Season 3 remark then that'd place the "real" date at 23-24 years. Thank you guys, for no longer trying to be "consistent" with that crappy mistake. Also, Kamesennin is DRUNK as hell in the movie, and the script doesn't try to dance around that fact, which is nice. (they do some funny stuff with that thing. A couple of this and other things are even funnier than as shown in the original) Here's my first real complaint about the script.

Japanese Oolong- "That Vegeta sure is a restless one, huh?"
English Oolong- "Vegeta's impatience makes me sick sometimes!"

Eh, didn't really like that change.

Kuririn- "Vegeta was asked to destroy this Legendary Super Saiyan and we had some extra flyer miles to spend."


Like I said, some of the dubbed changes were even funnier than the original, (Sabat certainly has a MUCH better "script batting average" than Neel Bligh) this just wasn't one of them. I just think sometimes they try to way hard to make Kuririn a mondo funny comedian, which usually has the opposite effect.

Vegeta- "... you clown."

If you'll remember in the middle of the Majin Buu Saga, Vegeta calls Goku a "clown" and Goku responds, "Clown, huh? Well that's a new one." Even though this movie is filler (like pretty much every movie except, technically, 9) it does take place prior to the Majin Buu saga.

Japanese Paragas- "Calm down Brolly!" English Paragas- "Behave Brolly."


He kind of sounded more "fatherly concerned" in the original line which is why I prefered the original line.

Japanese Goku- "So his battle power rises all at once, just like ours does, huh?"
English Goku- "My gosh, his power just increased dramatically!"


So, despite the fact that Kamesennin once got away with saying "all we can do now is pray to God" in Season 3 (a line that's repeatedly been shown on CN without any censorship- probably just another "accident"...) it'd appear that the FUNi exec's want to deny the existence of God as much as humanly possible in the dub...

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you think that soccer moms, the religious right and anybody else out there watching would be far more offended by this than by 7 curse words? I certainly am.

Japanese Goku- "You're the one who destroyed the South Galaxy, aren't you?"
English Goku- "Listen to what your father's telling you! Calm down, please!"


Hmm... just kind of an odd change I guess. Oh yeah, I guess I should point out that some Japanese words and sentences may have many more (or many less) syllables than ours. That, combined with the time length of mouth flaps intended for the original Japanese number of syllables, necessitates at least some changes. But overall, most lines that have been presented have been really good and told pretty much the same story as the original one.

Japanese Goku- "He's the devil!"
English Goku- "He's... he's pure evil."


Ah, c'mon FUNimation, what's so wrong with Brolly being the devil! Why can't- oh wait, I KNOW. Never mind, I know I know. All deitic bodies, and remotely religious lines must be censored and/or cut to conform to your "level of uncutness". I gotcha, that just makes perfect sense now doesn't it?

Japanese Piccolo- "Hmph, do as you like, you freak!"
Japanese Brolly- "I am a freak? Not so... I AM A DEVIL!"

English Piccolo- "Do you always pick on the children first?"
English Brolly- "I do what needs to be done. What else do you expect... from a true freak?"

Ditto, same as above. Also, I'd like to point out that the original line was rather famous among fans as "the coolest line from that Brolly movie." You can thank the powers that be who run/ruin FUNimation for making sure English fans couldn't also hear it in the dub.

Japanese Trunks and Gohan- "MASENKO!"
English Trunks- "Take this! Hah!"


Apparently it's okay for FUNimation to say the correct attack for DBZ Budokai when they've got 4 Toei executives watching over their shoulders like hawks, but when there aren't any Toei executives around watching them, IT'S NOT OKAY. C'mon FUNi, the game's sold almost/over a million copies in America, and everyone who's bought it is pretty much already familiar with Gohan's Masenko attack. You're not really hiding (or improving) much by pretending it doesn't exist in the dub. Also, if you pay close attention you'll notice that Gohan's mouth moves just as much as Trunks's, which makes only having Trunks speak look and sound kind of awkward.

English Goku- "Hey! Whattaya say you give us a handicap!"
English Brolly- "Is that another word for coffin?"


No complaints here, just a really cool line that I'm glad they added. Speaking of which, the rest of the movie is pretty much perfect. My only complaint would be that references to the fact that the movie takes place during Spring were eliminated.

Also, I should point out that in the original Kamesennin told Kuririn that "you're the best (singer) in Japan!" Heh, I guess even the original script writers make a mistake every now and then, and I'm really glad that they didn't replace it with something like "You're the best in Spain/Australia/America!"

...Man, who'd ever think that I'd be glad to hear that a man calling himself "Christopher" wrote a DBZ script? Thanks for Mr. Sabat, I hope you also write some more DBZ scripts for the rest of the Z movies, and maybe the Z redub and some GT stuff as you can be trusted to do a good job. Also, please make sure to keep that "other" Christopher away from those projects and the scripts should turn out just fine.
